This is such and fun activity to do with children using essential oils. As many of you know I (Joanna) am a preschool teacher. I’ve been using this super simple method to add a little bit of magic into ordinary art projects for years now, and today I thought I’d share this craft with you! This is a great indoor activity using essential oils while we’re in the middle of winter.
DIY Scratch Art with Essential Oils
Ingredients
- Crayons
- Heavy Paper (Construction Paper or Cardstock)
- Black Paint
- Dish Soap
- Essential Oils
- Something to use to scratch your design into the paper (a coin, wooden or plastic stylist, a paperclip etc.)
Instructions
- 1. Completely color your paper with crayon. You can do random scribbles, a specific pattern, or stripes…. This is completely up to you just as long as the paper is completely covered.
- 2. Next, mix a couple of drops of dish soap and a few drops of your favorite essential oil into your black paint. There is no exact ratio here. (About 1/4 tsp soap to 4 tbsps of paint.)
- 3. Paint over the colored side of your paper. Make sure that the crayon is completely covered by the paint and let dry.
- 4. Once the paint is dry, take a coin, wooden or plastic stylist, a paperclip, etc. and begin to scrape away the black paint in any design you choose.
I love the versatility that making your own scratch art paper brings. Not only can you customize the color scheme and scent, but you can use it to make a variety of personalized activities. Anything from personalized cards to baby gender reveal scratch offs! I’m thinking about making a scavenger hunt for the children at my work, hiding the clues in scratch art paper.
Thank you for hanging out with us and for taking some to explore this post. Let us know if you give it a try!
