When we moved into this new home I have to admit I was lacking inspiration to do anything with our master bedroom. I loved our previous master bedroom loft area so much. It had white painted floors, great natural light… it was just a really beautiful space. This new bedroom is significantly smaller, has carpet with plywood floors underneath, a light fixture I really don’t like, and modern closets that are not my style at all.
Another thing – we are currently renting.
This isn’t our forever home so other than paint we are not investing any money into this home. So, things like removing the modern closets or putting in new hardwood floors is just not going to happen.
But…
That hasn’t stopped me from wanted a beautiful bedroom that I actually want to hang out in. Also with baby coming, any day now, I really wanted to have a beautiful bedroom for us to hang out in since I’ll probably hang out there a lot for the first week solid.
Without further ado – here is what I came up with!
We did paint the walls when we first moved in the color White Moderne by Behr paint. It’s the color that we used for almost the entire house. It is technically a white but it defiantly pulls blue/grey. It’s basically the lightest shade of blue you can get and gives everything a nice cool tone.
Now, one day I would love to get a new quilt since this one is beat up and ripped in a ton of places. However, in interest of time and money this old quilt will work just fine.
My husband had just bought me these super comfortable regular sized pillows for Christmas, before we knew we were doing this bedroom makeover. We had been previously sleeping on 3 dollar pillows from Walmart lol.
So, instead I kept three of the pillows we sleep on and lined them on the back of the bed, in place of traditionally two king size pillow. I just put them in some off-white pillow cases I had that don’t match but I had just sitting in the closet.
Then, I stopped by our local Goodwill and found two linen curtain panels that had the perfect modern farmhouse design on them. Best part was each was only $2.00!
I took some ugly throw pillows we already had around the house and made some simple pillow cases to pull the bed together.
Next, I grabbed some White Chalked Paint by Rustoleum in Ultra Matte White. I use this paint for pretty much everything. I painted the side table, dresser, and mirror that I have also had since I was in middle school.
I kept the hardware that it originally came with, which surprisingly matched perfectly with the modern farmhouse feel I was going for.
My husband really likes having a lamp to have a soft lighting option. But I am super picky about lamps. So, instead I went with these very affordable sconces that don’t require any electrical work. They do have a cord that hangs down, but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
I used Edison bulbs in the sconces not only for the farmhouse feel but because they give off a really nice warm glow at night, which is super relaxing.
On my side of the bed I have never had a side table. I never really wanted one because I feel like it just takes up more space and would make the space feel smaller. But it would be nice to have a place to rest my phone at night or maybe a drink if I have one.
So, instead of a bulky side table I opted for this simple hanging shelf. I matched it with the height of the side table on my husbands side. Hopefully it doesn’t look too weird but it really works for me.
Finally, I finished off the room by adding some natural elements.
I absolutely love hanging out in here and won’t hate my life at all when I am stuck here cuddling our new baby as I recover. I hope this gives you inspiration and encourages you that you can do a modern farmhouse makeover on a tight budget.
