This actually isn’t a long post because there isn’t actually a whole lot that new born babies really need. Now the isle and isles at the stores may suggest otherwise. But I have found that 99% of these are a waste of money and I just add to the clutter around the house.
I know that it may seem overwhelming to buy all of the ingredients that I will be using in these recipes. But if you are also interested in creating a more natural home you’ll find that none of these products are uni-taskers. They all have multiple uses when you’re creating your own natural homemade products. Not one of these items I only use in one recipe, they all have at least 3-4 different uses.
Baby Body Lotion
I make my baby lotion the same way that I make my homemade whipped body butter that I have already shared. But incase you missed it you can find that here.
A great part of making these homemade natural products at home is that most are safe enough to use on the entire family from newborn to grandparents. I love keeping this in my diaper bag because my three year old daughter has eczema and always is needing this lotion as well.
Ingredients:
Shea Butter
Cocoa Butter
Coconut Oil (refined)
Lavender Essential Oil
Instructions:
- To a large glass bowl add 1/2 cup shea butter, 1/2 cup cocoa butter, and 1/2 cup coconut oil.
- Place the glass bowl over a pot of boiling water so the heat and steam will melt the contents of the bowl without burning. Stir occasionally.
- Once the contents of the bowl are liquid stir in 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
- Place the bowl in the freezer for about 5-10 minutes, or until the contents are beginning to harden but not hardened completely. Then with a hand mixer or whisk, whisk up the lotion until it is a smooth buttery consistency.
- Place in a glass jar and over with a lid. Use on baby whenever their skin is starting to feel a little dry.
Fun Fact: You can also use this as a lip balm.
Baby Diaper Cream
If you love Desitin diaper cream that you will love this one as well. What makes Desitin work so well is the zinc oxide which is included in this recipe, minus all the chemicals that I don’t want on my baby. It’s great at creating a barrier on the skin, which is why I always have it on hand to also make my homemade sunscreen.
Also, included in this recipe is bentonite clay which is great for drawing out toxins and healing the skin. I use it for a homemade face mask, poison ivy treatment, and a detox foot mask. So it’s defiantly not a product with only one use.
Ingredients:
Shea Butter
Coconut Oil (refined)
Non-nano Zinc Oxide
Bentonite Clay
Lavender Essential Oil
Bee’s Wax (optional)
Instructions:
- Into a large glass bowl add 1/4 cup shea butter, 1/4 cup coconut oil, and 2 tbsp bee’s wax.
- Place the glass bowl over a pot of boiling water so the heat and steam will melt the contents of the bowl without burning. Stir occasionally.
- Once the contents of the bowl are in liquid form stir in 2 tbsp non-nano zinc oxide, 3 tbsp bentonite clay, and 4-6 drops of lavender essential oil.
- Pour the contents of the bowl into a glass container, cover with a lid, allow to solidify for about an hour. Then it’s ready for baby!
Notes: Will keep for up to a year at room temperature. Also, I like to fill a few of these smaller flip top jars instead of one large jar. This way I can keep one upstairs, down stairs, and one in the diaper bag. But that is just my preference.
Fun Fact: This can be also used to treat dew poisoning on horses legs.
Baby Body Wash & Shampoo
This is the exact same foaming body wash that we use on ourselves and the rest of our children. It’s mild enough for new born babies, yet strong enough to clean my mud covered 5 year old boys.
Ingredients:
Dr. Bronners Baby Mild Castile Soap
Water
Lavender Essential Oil
Instructions:
- Fill a foaming soap bottle, or a regular soap dispenser, half way with Dr. Bronners Baby Mild Castile Soap.
- Add 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil then top off with water.
- Give the bottle a shake and it is ready to use!
Baby Breathe Roller Bottle
I really hesitated sharing this one because essential oils and babies can be a controversial topic. So please do your own research and follow what you feel comfortable with. But personally I feel that as long as the oil is diluted with a carrier oil and not ingested it is safe and beneficial for baby.
My baby is due right in the middle of cold and flu season. So I am anticipating a few cold symptoms will arise at some point. I will roll this on the spine of baby and on the bottoms of their feet to help when they seems a little congested. I will also use this on my older children.
Again use at your own comfort level.
Ingredients:
Breathe Essential Oil
Fractionated Coconut Oil
Roller Bottle
Instructions:
- To a glass roller bottle add 1-2 drops of Breathe Essential Oil.
- Top off the roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and place the top on.
- Give it a shake and it is ready to use.
Well that’s it.
To be honest the only one of these that is actually ‘baby specific’ is the diaper rash cream. Other then that we use all the other products on ourselves and our older children all the time. As you know we like to keep things as minimal and simple as possible over here.
Let me know if you end up giving any or all of these diy’s a try over on Facebook, Instagram, or in the comments below.
Thank-you so much for taking time out of your day to hang out here!
