DIY Moisturizing Sugar Scrub w/ Essential Oils

Advertisements

I don’t know about you, but my skin and cool/cold weather don’t get along too well. In fact, I’d say that they hate each other.

Since we have horses, we are at the barn in all sorts of weather conditions. I’m mucking stalls, filling water troughs, and busting ice out of water buckets…all that fun stuff often in below freezing temperatures. Before I took self-care seriously, my hands would crack until the bled in cool/cold weather. Too much information? Maybe, so I’ll move on.

I have tried lotion after lotion, but I could never stick to one because I absolutely hate the feel of it on my skin. Finally last year, I sat down and played around with ingredients to make a simple all natural sugar scrub that is also moisturizing. I really need to emphasize the moisturizing aspect of this scrub.

Personally for my skin, I don’t need to use anything but this all winter long. No extra lotion or oil – I repeat no lotion at all – this is it! I step out of the shower with super soft and moisturized skin every time.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Coconut Oil
1/4 cup Shea Butter
2 cups Sugar
10 drops Essential Oils (Lavender, Wild Orange, or Grapefruit)

Instructions:

1. Melt together 1/2 cup of shea butter and 1/2 cup of coconut oil in a double broiler system. (optionally add 1-2 tbsps of coco butter but it’s not necessary)

2. Once they are fully melted stir in 10 drops of essential oils of your choice and 2 cups of sugar (either white or brown is fine).

3. While it’s still soft add to a container of your choice.

4. Enjoy!
My personal essential oil favorites for this body scrub are:
Lavender – soothing and calming
Wild Orange – uplifting
Spearmint with Eucalyptus – promotes focus and healthy respiratory functions

**If you do choose to add a citrus oil, avoid sunlight and/or UV rays for 12 hours after application to your skin.
I like to add my scrub to half pint wide mouth jars or 4 oz mason jars. It’s shallow with a wide opening which makes it easy to scoop out. I also don’t like to use the metal tops that come with the mason jars. Since this is going to be sitting in the shower, I don’t want to deal with potential rust or finagling with the lid and ring. So instead, I use a plastic wide mouth lid.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Let me know in the comments if you make homemade self-care products and what they are. Make sure to pin this post for later, they make excellent gifts. Every year I get asked to make these basically in bulk.
Thank-you so much for taking time out of your day to hang out here.
