Since spring has arrived I am spending hours and hours in the garden, and out of the house. As soon as the ground became workable I ran out and I feel like I haven’t been back in since. Not really – not in any real sense anyways. After some time digging, planting, and contemplating, I think I realize why.
I am feeling very discontent with the feel of my home.
Everywhere I turn in the house is a wall that I desperately want to fix, decor I want to change, or paint color choices I regret.
It’s grating – really grating.
So, I clean, cook meals, teach homeschool, do laundry (maybe), and get outside as fast as I can.
There are a few factors that are contributing to it. The main one I elaborate on in a pervious post Breaking Up With Light and Airy Farmhouse. But breaking up with a previous decor style has left me trying to fully flush out what my “dream style” is. What the heck am I really aiming at.
I know what I like and what I don’t like (as stated in the post linked above) but it still feels a bit directionless.
Although it doesn’t need a title per-say, I want one. I would love to have a title or phrase that helps me and others, to the best of its ability, understand the vision that’s in my mind.
Let me preface – I love the “farmhouse style” trend.
I feel the need to mention this because I can see those embers of anti-farmhouse style heating up. But guys there are like 50+ versions of “farmhouse style” out there, and not all of them I can get behind.
Hobby Lobby/Target Farmhouse
Midcentury Mod Farmhouse
French Country Farmhouse
Historically Accurate Farmhouse
Extremely Historically Accurate Farmhouse
Gets Offended By Modern Appliances Farmhouse
Just A Little Sprinkle of Farmhouse Farmhouse
Season One Fixer Upper Farmhouse
*insert any adjective here* Farmhouse
**takes a big deep breath**
It’s challenging loving a style that is particular and not quite googleable.
It’s why I so quickly lean towards (or just plain fall into) other decor styles. It’s easier, cheaper, more accessible, and honestly more people will like it so I get a better pay off.
But all of those short cuts have created this mess that I am currently sitting with.
I don’t quite have a name for my style yet but my good friend (Joanna) calls it “Colonial”.
There is something to that name, and I think it will do for now. If you give ‘colonial farmhouse’ a google you won’t really run across the visions in my head. But it’s close enough and that’s helpful.
Narrowing down my style and giving it a sudo name has really helped me get a full vision of what I want my home to look like.
In the end giant list of what I like and what I don’t like really wasn’t helping me. (Though it’s helpful i.e. Breaking Up With Light And Airy) I wanted a phrase that encompasses my end goal with my home, even if I am the only one who understands it.
I think Colonial Farmhouse Style is that for me.
Maybe we have to test out the waters for awhile until we find what we love? Or maybe I just needed to feel confident enough to stick to what I know I really want?
Probably a mix of the two.
Thank-you so much for taking time out of your day to hang out here!
