Simple DIY Chalkboard

Advertisements

In Nicole’s homeschool room she wanted to do an entire chalk wall for the kids to draw on and use for schooling. But the house she currently lives in is a rental….so that won’t work. Instead I came up with this quick and incredibly cheap diy chalk board.

There are many many different ways to make this. However, this version is:

1. Incredibly Cheap
2. Removes off the wall. So, you could make this for a temporary homeschool room or dining room that doubles for a homeschool room. Then you can take it down when you’re not using it.
3. Takes very little time to put together.

Win – Win – Win   in my book.

Supplies:

Wood Glue
Chalkboard Paint
Paint Brush (or roller)
2-3   Screws with Anchors (for hanging)
1 –  3/4 in. x 3/4 in. Primed Finger-Jointed Pine Outside Corner Molding
1 –  MDF Board 3/4 in. x 2 ft. x 4 ft.

Instructions:

  1. Paint the board with chalk board paint of your choice. (2-3 coats following the instructions on the can)

  2. Cut the finger-jointed corner pieces so you have 2- 49 inch (top) and 2- 23 3/4 inch (sides).

  3. Run a bead of wood glue along the inside of the trim pieces and place them on the chalk board. Secure the trim pieces with either a large clamp or use something sturdy to secure the trim pieces on in place (they may slide). Allow to dry for 2-4 hours.

  4. Screw in 2 screws with anchors 32 inches apart where you would like your chalk board to sit. Allow the screw to stick out about 1/4 inch.

  5. Hang the chalk board by resting it on the screws, and enjoy!

Because we used outside corner pieces, it give the chalkboard a natural lip for the hanging screws to rest on which makes it easy to take on and off the wall. It also creates a small shelf of the top that easily rests a few pieces of chalk.

I just wanted to mention that you DO NOT NEED A CHALKBOARD TO HOMESCHOOL. If you are stressing out about the upcoming homeschooling year DO NOT FEEL LIKE THIS IS SOMETHING YOU WILL NEED.

BUT if you would like to utilize a chalk board and are on a budget this is a good option. You could make this board much larger for not much extra money.

If you give this a try be sure to let us know what you think or anything you would do differently!

Thanks for taking time out of your day to hang out here!
